Week of December 9th through 15th, 2009 noticed that the Midwest section of the country received the blizzard the metrologists predicted. My family in Iowa was snowed in and there was no school for the grandkids, but not sure for how long. My family in Indy didn’t receive as bad a storm surge as they did in Iowa. The weather even dipped a little down here in Texas too.
Rhonda and I made another trip to Livingston to pick-up our mail. While there we stopped to see John and Judy Long a couple that was at Adventureland earlier this summer. It’s nice to see friends that we meet along the way. The life of a full-timer traveling the country affords us the opportunity to see friends almost everywhere we travel.
Rhonda has been enjoying her time seeing her old boss Danny at the tanning salon and picking up a few extra dollars to help out. I took the test to be a enumerator in 2010 for the Census Bureau. So I will be counting on you (sorry I just couldn’t help myself). As you can see by my picture I have been hard at work on my computer. Until the next update which will be after the Christmas season, I hope all enjoy the holidays. I certainly plan on enjoying mine with my 9 grandkids.
Week of December 1st - 8th, 2009
Week of December 1st through 8th, 2009 first part of the week found Rhonda checking on her job at the tanning salon; I worked around motor home putting the water-filter on and doing odds & ends that needed attending too. The owner of the RV park, Guy and I went to play golf. We don’t keep score when we go out, we just go out to have fun and practice. On Friday, December 4, 2009 we had snow at the park. That makes two years in a row, if that keeps up we may have to come back here later in the year or go further south.
We talked about going on a nature walk Saturday, but the cold weather and snow on the ground killed that idea. So staying inside where it was nice and toasty, we enjoyed watching our big screen TV all day. Monday, Rhonda went into work and I raked leaves around our yard, while up north in Iowa they were getting ready for the blizzard coming in their area. The week was a run of the mill kind of week for us; it was just uneventful with the exception of the snowfall.

Date and Movie Day
Monday, November 30, 2009 we took this day for enjoyment. Driving down to the big city of Beaumont, Texas taking in a nice restaurant for a late lunch, we then went to see the movie Blind Side. It was a really good movie. I have read the book by Michael Lewis and the movie stays pretty close to the storyline. Sandra Bullock is really good in this movie and I wouldn’t be surprised to see her nominated for an Oscar. It is based on a true story. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to go out and watch a movie in the theatre.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!!!
Sunday, November 29, 2009 this might seem redundant but its SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!!! What else has to be said other than I went into my Man-cave mode and watched NFL all day and night?
The Big City of Houston
Saturday, November 28, 2009 dropping Sadie our little dog off for Bobby and Annette to babysit for the day, we took off for the big city of Houston to visit Rhonda’s sister, Barbara and her husband Nolan. We dropped off a Christmas tree their mom sent all the way from Indiana, with all the trimmings to boot. We had a nice visit and returned home late in the evening. We picked Sadie up and went home after a short visit with Bobby and Annette.
Busy work day
Friday, November 27, 2009 this was a very busy day for me working outside on the motor home cleaning the awning side so I could put the awning out later in the day. The wheel covers were put on all four tires that are exposed to the elements, cleaned our table & chairs for the patio, put out our solar lights, and cleaned the front basement. Rhonda had most of her chores done from the other day which allowed her to take it easy today.
Turkey Day my day
Thursday Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 2009 this is what I call my day – Tom Turkey Day. Guy and Linda were so gracious to invite us, along with another couple, into their home for the Thanksgiving Day meal. Linda, Rhonda and the other lady went to the grocery store to pick up our meals. We had a nice meal with Linda adding a few items from her pantry to complete our meal. It was a nice visit and good conversation by everyone. There was one missing ingredient for the day; at least in my humble opinion and that was family. But all-in-all it was a good day.
Getting things ready
Tuesday, November 24, 2009 just started doing things that needed to be accomplished around the motor home. Rhonda cleaning and putting things in their proper place, I on the other hand did my blue things outside. I put up the satellite dish, hooking up the water, sewer and electric lines to their proper places.
Ummm Crispy-cremes
Monday, November 23, 2009 went into Wal-Mart picking up a dozen Crispy-crème donuts. Arriving back at the motor home I stepped inside, sitting down at our new table to have a few mouth-watering donuts. I turned on the TV watching a little Good Morning America and waiting on Rhonda to get up. I heard her stirring around in the back and I was beaming with pride for my accomplishment of getting us the donuts. Out walks Rhonda, she looks at the four donuts missing from the box of twelve and just smiles at me. I couldn’t tell if it was a smile of satisfaction for my getting our breakfast or a smile saying, “I see you’re at it again.” After breakfast we headed toward Livingston, Texas to pick up our mail and settle in at our homestead in little Woodville, Texas. We traveled 226.8 miles today and arrived at 2 pm. Pulling into our spot, Bobby Adkins one of our dear friends came over to welcome us back, his wife Annette was still working. The owners were just getting back from town, Guy and Linda LaFoy. They too are very good friends of ours.
Sunday a Travel Day
Sunday, November 22, 2009 we didn’t get the early start I had hoped for. This will keep us out another night. We did travel 326 miles today arriving in Atlanta, Texas around 4:10 pm. Trying to keep in good grace with the RV rule of 2X4 as I explained earlier. Because of this being a travel day, I didn't get a chance to watch the NFL games on TV.
Branson, MO
Saturday, November 21, 2009 leaving Lambert’s parking lot early this morning, we traveled along highway 60 setting our sights on Turkey Creek RV Campgrounds which is associated with the Escapee’s RV Club. The campground is close to Branson, MO home of a lot of country and western shows. We didn’t have time to see any this time but it will be a good stop over for us. The first 88 miles was pretty smooth sailing for us, but the next 157 miles was like a never ending roller-coaster ride. We traveled a total of 244.8 miles today.
Lambert's Throwing Rolls Cafe
Friday, November 20, 2009 this was a travel day for us. The first part of the day went rather slow because we had fog most of the morning and the road we traveled on was very curvy. Our philosophy of travel is why take an interstate, when you can travel the back roads and enjoy the scenery. Besides we very seldom travel faster than double-nickel (55 mph) on any road we roll on. We traveled 319.8 miles until we arrived at Sikeston, MO pulling into the Lambert’s Café parking lot, the home of the thrown rolls. Anywhere in the restaurant if you want a roll a roving roll thrower will yell out, not to anyone in particular if they want a roll. If you raise your hand he will throw you one. If you miss it and it goes on the floor, no problem he will just throw you another one until you catch it.
South to New Whiteland, Indiana
Thursday Evening, November 19, 2009 leaving just a little after the noon hour, we pointed the motorhome down 465 loop southbound for the town of Greenwood. We were going to Camping World to see about a couple of items and see more friends. Dallas and Betty, a couple we hadn’t seen in almost three years. Betty and Rhonda worked together at the Brownsburg bank before Rhonda went to the town hall. We truly enjoy their company and they are such sweet people. We went out for dinner and then they took us back to their lovely new house. Afterward we came back to the motorhome at Camping World showed them our new layout, had coffee and cake. We said our goodbyes to them as well and retired for the night.
Craig my Motor Home Veterinarian
Thursday Morning, November 19, 2009 we were up early getting things ready to go back to see Craig and Debbie for our oil change. I pulled into the parking area around 8:15 just behind Craig in his pick-up truck. Debbie was already there getting things ready in the office. Rhonda took the car to McDonald’s to get us a couple of breakfast sandwiches and she soon pulled up too. Craig went right to work changing the oil and doing a few other things that needed to keep the moving home floating down the highway like it was on a cloud. Craig is one guy who takes pride in what he does, and he is the only one so far that has ever touched our home on wheels – mechanically. If you are ever on the Westside of Indianapolis in the Avon area, he is the man for all your truck service needs, or motorhome needs as well. I trust him exclusively with our motorhome, I hope I never have to take it to anyone else. We said our goodbyes again and hoped that the next time we see them, we will be able to spend a little more time socially with them.
C&D Trucking Service in Indy
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 pulled into C&D Truck Services to get the oil changed in the motorhome. Craig and Debbie the owners were already there and Debbie let us in the back parking lot of their establishment. Craig was busy taking care of an Avon Fire Truck. It was decided Thursday would be a better day for us to take care of the oil change. We visited for a few minutes before we headed towards Jamestown to a RV park that we stayed at two years ago. Paying for a couple of nights, we just took it easy the next couple of days. We did go out for dinner with some good friends, Darryl and Susan Kaytar. Susan and Rhonda worked together at Brownsburg Town Hall. We went for a pizza in the city of Pittsboro where they live. It was a nice evening of reminiscing.
Leaving Day
Monday, November 16, 2009 up and at’em this Monday morning getting things ready for our travel day, but it won't happen until the afternoon. Last minute things are being stuffed back into every crevice that shines a light. After putting the car on the dolly and parking the motor home out front of Jane and Al’s home, our departure time was 2pm. We waved our good-byes as we turned onto the main street and headed south on highway 3 toward Greenfield, Indiana. We traveled 113 miles and arrived at the Wal-Mart parking lot around 5pm. Calling my beautiful daughter Katie, we made arrangements for her to come and pick us up. This was one of a handful Wal-Mart’s which wouldn’t allow semis or RV’s to stay in their parking lot overnight. Actually, it was a city ordinance by the city of Greenfield, you are only allowed to park for two hours, then you have to move on. So I talked to the security guard and smoozed him into allowing us another hour or so. Rhonda and I went back to Katie’s apartment picking up my new son-in-law (Kevin) and my granddaughter Ally so we all could go out to dinner. We went right next door to where the motor home was parked, to an O’Charlies Restaurant. It was a really good dinner and we had a nice visit with them. I want to thank Kevin again for buying dinner. (Just a quick note to my new son-in-law; it’s all over now, you don’t have to butter me up)
It was rather late when we took off from the Greenfield area requiring our lights to be turned on for the motor home. I rarely travel at night since I try to follow the RV’ers 2X4 rule of travel: which means – 200 miles or 4 o’clock in the afternoon whichever comes first; then you should be stopped for the night. I found out my running lights and dashboard lights were not working, giving me another reason not to travel at night. It was still raining and had been all day and night at least our windshield wipers were still working; but we were tired of this weather. We finally settled in at the Avon, Wal-Mart on the Westside of town and ready ourselves for a good night’s sleep.

I love weekends
Saturday, November 14, 2009 a lazy Saturday morning, I woke-up at 7:30 am. Rhonda soon follows me out to the kitchen. We are getting ready to take Jane to the Saturday morning ritual of the beauty shop, lunch and then made a quick stop at the Hallmark Store. Arriving home Rhonda and Jane went inside, while I went to the motor home to salivate over the new look of our home. In just two more days we will be heading slowly back to Texas, via a few stops along the way. I’m ready to get back on the road.
Sunday, November 15, 2009 just two words to say about today. NFL and Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.

Happy Birthday Ally
Friday, November 13,2009 happy birthday Ally, you are now 7 years old. It’s also Friday the 13th for any who are superstitious. Rhonda and Bonnie headed up north to pick-up cheese balls from Claire, a high school friend of Rhonda’s. Then they were going to visit Rhonda’s sister, Lynda in Elkhart, Indiana. My job this day was to take Jane to the doctor’s office to have her stitches removed -- all three of them. We weren’t in the office more than 5 minutes. Jane was such a good girl; I took her over to Culver’s for ice-cream. We arrived home a little after the noon hour; she took it easy just as the doctor had directed her. He did tell her to slowly work her way off the walker, which was a good thing for her to hear since she is a very independent person.
Cookie Monster Day
Thursday, November 12, 2009 Rhonda and her mom went out shopping, evidently her knee is starting to feel better. Rhonda came back and made some really delicious chocolate-chip cookies which everyone in the household ate with big smiles on their faces and a few cookie crumbs around the lips.
Vets Day
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 Veterans Day. Woke-up with a stomachache and headache. This wasn’t a good thing since I was going to Indy to see Ally’s (my granddaughter) school play. It was to be a tribute to the veterans. I wasn’t getting any better so I had to call Katie (my daughter) and let her know I wouldn’t be able to make it and please tell Ally how sorry pa-paw was for missing her play. I couldn’t fight it anymore and had to go back to bed for most of the morning. This day was a waste for me. I don’t like being sick, but who does?
Monday morning blues turn into Early Tuesday Op's
Monday, November 9, 2009 the doctor’s office called telling us that Jane’s operation is setup for tomorrow at 7 am.
Tuesday, November 10, 2009 Rhonda was really an early bird this morning. I’m not even sure when she was up. I was up at 4:50 am, went to kitchen for breakfast and started getting ready to take Jane for her operation this morning. After checking in and completing all the necessary paperwork, it was time for us to just wait. The doctor came out and talked to Rhonda and me about the operation. He came back within a 30 minute time frame telling us it was done. The procedure only took 10 to 15 minutes. Rhonda went back to the recovery room to see her mom, she was doing just fine. At 9:00 am we were leaving the clinic for the ride home. Once home Rhonda went into her nursing mode. She had been in it since my gallbladder incident and has been there since this knee problem came to the surface. She scurried around making sure her mother was comfortable and taken care of in all aspects.

Aahhh the weekend!
Saturday, November 7, 2009 we have been in the driveway of Rhonda’s mom on and off for over a month. The motor home was either in the driveway or up in an Amish driveway for remodeling; anyway you look at it we are staying in Ft. Wayne a lot longer than planned. Initially we were supposed to be here no longer than a couple of weeks. The circumstances of my gallbladder and Jane’s knee have delayed our return to Texas. After yesterday it was decided Jane was going to have the arthroscopic surgery to her right knee to remove the meniscus. Mainly what is going to happen as far as I understand it is the doctor is going in and removes the meniscus in the knee. It’s only supposed to be a 30 minute procedure and it’s done as an outpatient status.
Sunday, November 8, 2009 Rhonda is going to store to get the fixing’s for chili for tonight’s supper. I on the other hand plan on being useless again because it’s Sunday, Sunday, Sunday which means NFL all day long.

Union Meeting & Your Meniscus is Ready
Thursday, November 5, 2009 Rhonda went to a union meeting. She hasn’t been to one in years. I think she really enjoyed it; the six ladies that showed up made it more like a social gathering, than a union meeting.
Friday, November 6, 2009 took Jane back to doctor’s office for consultation on her knee. He suggested she have the meniscus removed, but it would be her decision. We took her to Culver’s for lunch, then back home to rest and think about her next move concerning her knee.

Homey Feeling
Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Jane’s doctor called today telling her she needed to have her meniscus repaired, but he was ruling out a knee replacement at this time because of her age (82). Jane needed to make a decision soon. Rhonda and I went out looking for area rugs for the motor home. We had done this in the past without much success, today would be different. We found two identical rugs that we fell in love with as soon as we put them down on our new hardwood floor. Who would have thunk-it, we found them at Menard’s. Look at the pictures, what do you think? They look like they were made for the motor home.
Election and Decision Day
Tuesday, November 3, 2009 took Jane for her MRI and it showed a torn meniscus (cartilage) in her knee. Al still remains in his state of dizziness. A decision had to be made whether she wanted no operation and receive some relief with pain medication; or have surgery to remove the meniscus. At this point Jane is walking with a borrowed walker from a neighbor.
My son, Ted was running for a position as city-councilman for Clive, Iowa. Tonight would give us the results. The results came down that he didn’t win, but he was going up against some well known candidates in the community. He gave a good showing for his very first time running for a political office. Our whole family was very proud of him. I just want him to know that. There’s always the next time. I’m sure he will learn from this experience and eventually win a seat. That’s just the type of man he has proven to be.

Doctor & MRI
Monday, November 2, 2009 a doctor’s appointment was setup to take Jane (Rhonda’s mom) for her knee problem. Al (Rhonda’s step-dad), had a dizzy spell, so we wound up taking them both to the doctor. I had an early morning doctor’s appointment for the car; it needed an oil-change and a new battery. I took care of that first and then it was off to the people’s doctor at 2 in the afternoon. It was decided that Jane needed an MRI and that Al is always in a state of dizziness.

Home Sweet Home
Saturday, October 31, 2009 today is the beauty shop ritual day. Rhonda and I took Jane, her mom to her weekly hair appointment. It rolls around like clockwork, every Saturday. After getting really pretty, we took this 82 year young lady out to lunch. While we were at lunch Lester called us to inform us the motor home would be ready for pick-up at 4 pm.
GREAT!
Dropping Jane off at her house because her right knee was really bothering her, plus I needed to get my checkbook to pay Lester for the remodeling job.
We pulled in next to our home on wheels with great expectation. I let Rhonda walk in first; I just wished I could have seen her face as she stepped inside. When I stepped inside it blew me away. I was so impressed with what he had done with everything the smile on my face probably was a mile wide.
Nothinz's
Friday, October 30, 2009 we went over to Bonnie’s to pick her up and head for Shipshewana, Indiana on a raining day. And it did rain on us all day long but we had a wonderful time. Rhonda wanted to pick-up something similar to flip-flops that Bonnie had bought at an Amish store in Shipshewana. They’re called Nothinz’s. Rhonda found what she wanted at the Red Barn Store; from there Bonnie took us out for a wonderful lunch.
We're getting there
Still learning the in’s & out’s of this blogging thing so please be patient with me. In spite of everything; I will figure it out as I go along. My plan is to blog at least once a month, but try to do it every fifteen days, the 1st and 15th of every month.
Thursday, October 29, 2009 we went to Warsaw, Indiana to see our good friends, Dave and Claire and had lunch at a Mexican restaurant with them. They are heading down to the Valley (southern part of Texas) on December 19th. We are still waiting around for our moving home which is stationary at this time. Traveling back to the Ft. Wayne area, we called Bonnie (a longtime friend of Rhonda’s from International Harvester) to see if it would be okay to stop by and see her. Rhonda still had to give Bonnie a few more lessons on Swedish Weaving and I still had a World Series game to watch on her big screen TV. Before we could get back in town, Lester the Amish gentleman called to see if we could stop by to see him. He was having a little trouble figuring out how to mount our new big-screen TV. Once we arrived, Lester and his dad, Samuel met us at the motor home. After much discussion and statements in our brainstorming session such as, “What if?” or “What about if we try this?” we did come to a consensus about one of Rhonda’s ideas concerning mounting the TV. With everyone happy with the problem solved, Lester took us into his workshop to show us what he had completed so far.
WOW!
What he showed us was so impressive. We can’t wait to see it installed and completed. Here are pictures of what he had in the workshop, not yet installed, and a picture of Rhonda giving her lesson on Swedish Weaving to Bonnie at her house.

Catching up
Just the second day of writing on this blog and already I'm conflicted on how to implement certain items into this writing. There is no way I can catch up on all that has happened since we started traveling. However; I think by adding at the end a little bit of history, I can reminisce about some of our adventures and potentially catch up on highlights from the past. Today, Rhonda and I are going up to Warsaw, Indiana to visit some good friends, Dave and Clair Ton. We are going up to have lunch with them and just shoot the bull. Our original plan was to stop to see them in Tennessee while they were working at Dolly-World. That couldn't happen because our motor home wasn’t ready for travel yet and they are back in Indiana now.
As I stated our motor home isn’t ready for travel yet, because it is being worked on by an Amish father and son duel, Samuel and Lester Schwartz. There’s a little history about us trying to remodel our motor home this year. The first thing we needed to take care of was our old mattress. So just before leaving the Des Moines, Iowa area after working all summer at Adventureland Amusement Park, we went out shopping for a mattress. We found one at Homemaker’s Furniture Store in Des Moines. So on our way out of town we stopped at my daughter’s, Kimmy Stuart to leave her and Mike (my son-in-law) our old mattress. Then just a ½ a mile or so down the road we stopped to pick-up the new mattress. After spending over an hour there, first putting in a Queen-size mattress which was the correct size in length, but wasn’t the correct size in width. They tried to give us one that was the right width, but was too long and we couldn’t put our slide all the way in. Queen-size mattresses in RV’s are only 75 inches in length, while a queen-size in stick homes are 80 inches. We needed what was known as a Queen-short. We finally gave up, told them to take it back and give us our money back. They did and we went our merrily way down the road. We used a blowup queen mattress for the next couple of weeks. And believe it or not, it was really comfortable.
We arrived at Jane’s house on October 1st. Jane is Rhonda’s mom and we parked in her driveway. Our plan was to be here a couple of weeks, attend my youngest daughter’s (Katie) wedding and head back to Texas for the winter. Okay, all good plans sometime come to an end and this one did too. Our stay was extended a little longer than planned. I had a gallbladder attack. I was admitted to the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. After a couple of days of tests, trials and the tribulation of being poked in places I’d rather not talk about. I was diagnosed by my doctor that it was necessary for the aforementioned appendix inside my body should be removed. It was, I’m fine and now we go on with the story.
We found an excellent mattress for our motor home. It was special order and delivered to us while I was still in the hospital. To this day, October 29th I still haven’t slept on it, nor has Rhonda. There are reasons for that, but I won’t get into the long story of it, let me just say the operation, recovery time and the remodeling have taken the opportunity away from us so far. We are both looking forward to sleeping in our own bed -- soon.
We traveled over to see one of Rhonda’s friends, Bonnie who she worked with at International Harvester many years ago. Bonnie was having her whole house remodeled thanks to the Chase Manhattan Bank. I started talking to the foreman who happened to be Amish, a Mr. John Miller. We kidnapped him and another gentleman Mr. Lester Schwartz bringing them down to our motor home. We explained what we wanted. They both looked at us in wonderment.
Lester looked at Rhonda and said,
“You want all of that done in this small of a space? You know we are accustom to having a lot of room to work in?”
After much head scratching and brainstorming over the next few weeks, we finally came up with solutions to each and every problem which popped up.
John and his brother-in-law, Melvin and Melvin’s dad, put in our hardwood floor. It looks great. (It was mostly Melvin and his dad doing the work). Then on one of our shopping sprees, we went up to Shipshewana, Indiana looking for a Loveseat with wall-hugging recliners. We found them, in of all places Weaver’s Furniture Store. Driving up to Shipshewana after picking up the motor home with our new, great looking hardwood floor, we had a new loveseat installed where the old couch used to be. A one hour drive back to Samuel and Lester’s shop, we dropped off the motor home for them to start work on it as soon as possible. Oh by the way, somewhere in this storyline I forgot to mention the fact a new 32” TV was bought and ready for installation into the scheme of things.
So we are still waiting with anticipated excitement on the return of our (new-remodeled) home. I took some before pictures, some in progress ones and will include some of the after ones too, upon completion. We were told the motor home should be ready by no later than the 3rd or 4th of November. We were hoping for tomorrow, because that was the first timeline given us, but it’s looking more like next week. That’s all we have for now, of course there’s a lot more to tell, just don’t have the time to get everything down like I want. I’m going to take it slowly and hopefully this will be interesting enough for our family and friends to read.

A New Dawn
Okay this is the first of hopefully many more postings to this blog. This is all new to me so it will take me a little bit of time to compose what I want and work through the errors which I know will occur. I'm use to writing a newsletter to family and friends. Normally it was every month but I have fallen on slower times. It seems so much has been happening in the last eight months, that I have neglected my responsibilities of putting together our newsletter. It's something I hope can be averted by posting on this blog. As the learning process takes place, pictures, text and travel experiences will be posted as well.
